Criminal Lawyer and Betting Games: The Challenges of Summer 2024
What will be the challenges of this upcoming summer for lawyers and criminal courts?
The period of “judicial recess” will coincide with the Olympic Games period (from July 26 to August 11, 2024). The Paralympic Games will begin during what promises to be a particularly busy judicial return (from August 28 to September 8, 2024). The challenges in criminal matters will be significant, notably due to an exceptional influx of visitors.
On January 15, 2024, the Minister of Justice announced the implementation of an exceptional plan for the occasion, including reinforcement of staff for the courts that will be particularly affected. This mainly concerns the courts of appeal of Paris and Versailles. Nine other courts of appeal and fourteen tribunals are also concerned since several cities within their jurisdiction will host the games.
In terms of criminal policy, particular attention will be paid to cyber-attacks, offenses committed based on sexual orientation, religion, or any other cause of discrimination, unauthorized drone use, or false bomb threats.
Regarding so-called petty offenses or misdemeanors, "quick, strong, and systematic responses" are recommended.
Specifically, ticketing or accommodation fraud as well as counterfeiting and doping will also be subject to equally firm criminal responses.
Legal and criminal predicaments such as arrest, custody, or even immediate appearance before a judge, require the assistance of a lawyer. The firm will remain mobilized throughout the period.
